About Hallandale Beach
In the 1890s, Henry Flagler recruited Luther Halland to found a small Swedish farming settlement south of Dania. By 1900, twelve families called the community home. The town incorporated on May 11, 1927 with 1,500 residents, becoming the eighth municipality in Broward County. Reincorporated as a City in 1947, Hallandale annexed land east to the Atlantic Ocean. The city officially changed its name to Hallandale Beach on August 27, 1999.
Geographically, Hallandale Beach covers 4.55 square miles in southern Broward County, just north of the Miami-Dade County line. Hollywood lies to the north, Aventura to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and Pembroke Park to the west. The Historic Hallandale Schoolhouse, built in 1910, is the oldest building in Broward County originally built as a school. Gulfstream Park, opened on February 1, 1939, anchored the city's transition from farming to gaming and tourism.
