About Palm Beach Gardens

While Palm Beach Gardens was incorporated in 1959, it began many years previously. A landowner and insurance magnate with a grand idea, John D. MacArthur dreamed of developing homes for more than 55,000 people on an area of 4,000 acres. Originally, he wanted the city to be called Palm Beach City, but the Florida Legislature denied him because of the similarity in names with nearby Palm Beach. Instead, MacArthur amended the name somewhat, and "Palm Beach Gardens" was born to reflect his idea of building a "garden city."

The town, perhaps best known for being the head office for the Professional Golfers' Association of America, or PGA for short, has earned Palm Beach Gardens the nickname of "The Golf Capital of the World." Many number-one-ranked gold courses and clubs line this beautiful city. Though the city contains no beaches of its own, it is merely minutes of driving to reach the nearest one.

Downtown Palm Beach Gardens is anchored by this popular shopping and dining destination. Added to other nearby shopping hotspots, like The Gardens Mall and Legacy Place, the city has taken on a more urban feel without losing its suburban charm.

While its earliest settlers came in 1872, Palm Beach Gardens didn't see significant growth until the mid-1900s. Today, the city is some four miles from the closest beaches and has a tropical rainforest climate with humid temperatures year-round. It is hot and rainy in summer and mild, yet drier in winter; the best time to go is between November and April.

It preserves the historical heritage of the city proudly. Lots of efforts have been made by the Palm Beach Gardens Historical Society to gather and preserve such a rich past for posterity. New members are encouraged to participate if interested in local history, assisting in data entry, photo imaging, archives, and much more.
