About Aventura
In the 1950s, developer Donald Soffer purchased large tracts of swampland in northeast Miami-Dade County. Together with Eddie Lewis, Soffer began building condominiums in the 1970s and named the development "Aventura," Spanish for "adventure." The Turnberry Isle Resort opened in the 1970s, followed by the Aventura Mall in 1983. Aventura incorporated as an independent city on November 7, 1995. The Aventura Police Department was formed in 1997.
Geographically, Aventura borders North Miami Beach to the south, Hollywood to the north, and Sunny Isles Beach across the Intracoastal Waterway. The Aventura City of Excellence charter school and Don Soffer Aventura High School both earn A+ state ratings. Population density reaches 15,196 people per square mile, sixth-highest in Florida.
